AABOUT  THE   SITE –The  site  is  of  religious ,archaeological,and  pre  historical  importance.According  to  religious and  pauranic  literatures once
Deoraj  Indra  killed  one  demon Brijasur..He  was  son of  a Brahman. So Indra  became  infected  by  the  sin  of  brahmhatya.So  he  got  down  to take  bath  in  the  Ganges  at  this  place which  was  flowing  here  at  that  time.The  Ganges  washed  the  karush  or  the mal,the  dirt, and  set  IIndra 
free  from  the  sin.So  this  place  was  later changed to Masarh or Karisath
with  lapses  of  time.
 Huensang  came  to  this  place  in seventinth century  in  his  tour.He  has  mentioned  as  Mahasolo  or  Masal.
It  is  also  expressed  askingdom  of  demon  king BanasurBishwamitra  got
Ram  and  Lakshman  to destroy  demons  like  Tadka and  Banasur  at  this
place.Remnants  located  are  as  follows----
1It  is  remnant  of  earthen  mound  which  was excavated and located  by
Mr  Buchanan  in  1871-72(report  in 1918-19) It  was  spread  over  in  an
Area  of  50x50  sqr  yards It  is  in  west  of  Masarh.In  1971-73 the  area  was  disturbed  by  railways  for  repair  and  construction Remnant  portion 
of  the  mound  is known  as  Banasur  ka  Ghar Similarly  a  pond  south
of  the  mound  is  known  as  Usha  ka  talab2A  big  statue  of  lord  VISHNU-A  very  big  statue  of  lord  Vishnu  made  of  sand  stone  was  found  here  during  the  excavation  which  is  now  placed  in  the  gallery
  of  Patna  museum3VISHNU  TEMPLE-This  is  old  temple of  lord  Vishnu in  the  village  premises  showing  presence  of  Hindu  vaishnav  sect  here.4JAIN  TEMPLE—Presence  of  old  Jain  temple  in  the  village  also  shows  prevalence  of  Hindu  vaishnav  sect  here  with  improved
religious  modification.5STATUE  OF  YGAYA—It  was  also  found during excavation  near  Banasur  ka  ghar.Later  on  it  was  transferred  to

ABOUT  THE   SITE-As  per  the  historical  trace  out  from  the  archaeological  stone  inscription  the  site  used  to  had  been  pilgrimage  of  Hindus since  4th  century. The  temple  of  Mundeshwari  finds  mention
In  the  travel  diaries  of  RN Martin,F.Buchenan and  Black  in 1838and 1904 A slab  with  inscription  in Brahmi script was found in 1892.Another
Part  of  the  same  slab  was  found  by  Black  in  1903.There were 18 lines
In  the  inscription . But  only  15  lines  could  be  read  and  correctly  interpreted.Historian   Prof  RD Banarji  concluded  establishment  of  temple in 636  AD.Where as  NG Majumdar  kept  the  date  at  348 to 349.
While D R Bhandarkar  kept it  before 4th  centuryA D.
THE  TEMPLE-The  statue  of  mother  Mundeshwari  is  eatablished  in  the  temple  in Mahishasna  poseShe  is  Vashnavi.The  present  inner  and
Central  hall  of  the  temple  is  residence of  Shiv family Mahadeo himself
Lie  in  the  centre with four  mouth Mundeshwari  is  in  the  Eastern  wallet.Ganesh  in  the north.
MYTHOLOGICAL-The  place  is  also  ascribed  to  story  of  Durgasaptsati
Of  Markandey puran.That  it  was kingdom  of two  demon brothers Chand
and  Mund Chand  used  to  worship  Chandeshwari  temple  in  near  about 
Madurne  village  and  Mund  used  to  worship Mundeshwari  temple established  near  BhagawanpurBoth  were  killed  by  deity  Durga  who
latter  on  expressed  herself  asDurgawati  river  in  the  area  as  blessing
or  local  devotees.
FESTIVITY  AND  WORSHIP-Shardiya  and  Chait  navratra  are  the  main  festivals when  ygya  is  also  celebrated  on  large  scaleA  big  fair
is  also  organisrd .A  special  type  of  sacrifice  is  done.The  goat  or  patha
is  brought  and  the  priest  chants  some  mantra  in  name  of  mother and
throws  the  akshat(rice  grains) on  it  .The  goat  fades  down  and  becomes
senseless.After  some  moment  priest again  chants mantra and says  “raksha
karo   maa” and throws  akshat  on  the  goat.The  goat  gets  alive  and  rises

up  and  goes  staggering  out  of  the  temple.A  special  type  of  Prasad  called  Tandul  Prasad  is  given  to  the  worshippers  from  the  temple 
establishment  side.

REMARK-Studies  of  ancient  Indian  history  reveals  that  this  pilgrimage

was  formerly  a  temple   of  lord  Vishnu.But  latter on  during  time  of  Chero  dynasty  god  in  the  name  of  Mandleshwar  was  started   being  worshipped  along  with  his  wife  Mandaleshwary ,as  kuldevi  of  the  Chero  dynasty.This  later  on  became  Mundeshwary.

Pal  dynasty  kings  from  9th  to  11th  century.It  was  under  the  custody  of  Sultan  of 
Bengal  in  13th  century and  remind   under  muslims  up  to  17th  centuryMirkasim  was  the  last  king  who  was  defeated  by  British  in1764

It  is  near  Dumarkhar  village(24:48’::83:53’) in Sunder-pahari  regionAlthough  in  existence  from  much  early  period,the  credit  of  discovery of  the  site   goes  to cow boy Dadan  bind  of Mohamadpur  tola, while  chasing  a  porcupine(shahil)in  early  years  of  21st century.The  cave was found connected
With  a  number  of  tunnels which  contains  number
Number  of ponds  and  Shivling  like  structures  of  stalactite  and  stalcmite with  big  hairs  or  Jata  like
creation.
        Such  caves  and  tunnels  find  descriptions  in
Scriptures  like  “Chandrakanta  santati” and  “Bhutnath”by  Deokinandankhatri  and  “Himalaya  kah  raha  hai”by saint  Pilot baba besides  other  older  and pauranic  literatures.,which  tells  the  area
to  be  meditation  region of  Vishwamitra.
